Hyundai to introduce extended range electric concept at Geneva

Hyundai will introduce the i-oniq concept at the Geneva Motor Show next week. The i-oniq is an electric sports hatchback with a range-extending gasoline engine.

The i-oniq concept has an innovative powertrain that demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to clean technology. A 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder gasoline engine is mated, via a generator, to an 80 kW electric motor. In electric-only mode, i-oniq has a range of 120 km (75 miles), while with assistance from the gasoline engine it can travel up to 700 km (435 miles), producing 45 g/km of CO2 in the process.

At 4.4 meters long, i-oniq has space for four occupants in its driver-oriented cabin.

In what could be our final round of spy photos of the upcoming Volvo V40 (or at least those picturing prototypes with heavy camouflage), our diligent spies snapped the five-door hatchback model as it was completing its winter tests on the snow.

Volvo Cars CEO Stefan Jakoby gave us a sneak peek of the new V40 at an interview with Hakan Matson, chairman of the European Car of the Year Jury, on Friday, where he also revealed that the car will be officially introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show next March.

During the interview, Jakoby said that he is "extremely positive" and "really excited" about the V40, which will be positioned against the five-door variants of the Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series as well as the Lexus CT200 h.

Aston Martin Said to Reveal New V12 Vantage Roadster Next Year

While Aston Martin may not have a lot of cash going around for the development of new platforms or engines, the British automaker is trying to make the best of what it already has.

What this means is that it is churning all sorts of models and body styles based on the same hardware (and design…) for almost a decade now...

We're not sure how long Aston Martin can keep doing it - some say it has already reached its limits - but for the time being, we learn that the company will unveil yet another version of one of its existing models, the V12 Vantage Roadster.

New Hyundai i-oniq Concept Going Geneva, Foretells Future Design Direction

Hyundai has rolled out a teaser sketch of a new concept car named 'i-oniq' that will be revealed in a world premiere at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March. Designed and developed at the company’s European R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the i-oniq concept is said to preview the next evolution of Hyundai's ‘fluidic sculpture’ form language, which is featured on the brand's recent production models like the Sonata, the i40 and the Veloster.
Thomas Bürkle, Hyundai’s European Chief Designer described the new design language thusly: “Two strong arched curves define the silhouette of i-oniq, creating a playful contrast between the sharp character lines and soft but muscular features.”
Hyundai said that it would reveal more information as well as pictures on its new design concept in the forthcoming weeks.

New BMW 6-Series Range Grows with the Addition of the Four-Door Gran Coupe - Car Photos

It took BMW 20 months from the presentation of the Concept Gran Coupe at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show in April of 2010 to present the production version of its foray into the premium four-door coupe segment., the all-new 6-Series Gran Coupe.
The new model is essentially a four-door version of the latest 6-Series Coupe and will allow the Bavarian automaker to compete head on with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi A7 Sportback and Porsche Panamera sports saloons.
Given that the original concept was production ready, it doesn't come to much of a surprise that the only styling changes made concern the lower part of the front bumper, the re-positioned reflectors on the rear bumper and the different tail pipes.
The Gran Coupe's exterior styling builds on 6 Series Coupe adding an extra pair of doors while keeping the low-slung appearance.
Measuring 197 inches (5,007mm) long with a wheelbase of 116.8 inches (2,968 mm), the Gran Coupe is 4.4 inches (111mm) longer than its 2-door coupe sibling, with most of the extra length going towards the rear passengers.
The 6-Series Gran Coupe is also 74.6 inches (1,894 mm) wide and stands 54.8 inches (1,392 mm) tall. For comparison purposes, the Gran Coupe is 4.0 inches (102mm) longer, 1.3 inches (34mm) wider and 2.8 inches (72mm) lower than the BMW 550i sedan.
For the most part, the interior design is identical to the 6-Series Coupe, though BMW has used exclusive materials and trims while the seating position is slightly higher. The German company describes the Gran Coupe as a "4+1" as the center tunnel extends to the rear seat. The luggage compartment has 16.24 cu. ft (460-liter) of space, which is exactly the same as the 6-Series coupe.
The new Gran Coupe will launch with three engines, all linked to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission. The 640i comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six petrol delivering 320HP, while the 640d features a 3.0-liter turbo diesel with 313HP. Finally, the 650i gets a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 gasoline engine that churns out 450-ponnies. The 650i will be available from launch in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive flavors.
BMW said that in the States, the series would launch with the 640i early in the summer of 2012, with the 650i and 650i xDrive to be available a couple of months later.
More engines, including a twin-turbocharged V8 with around 560 horses linked to a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox for the flagship M6 Gran Coupe, will join the lineup down the line.
The Gran Coupe will make its world premiere at the next Geneva Motor Show in March of 2012.
